I'm reminded of the oft-repeated, "everyone's faves are problematic." The question of where we draw the line, what we are willing to overlook to enjoy the art and what we are not feels like an incredibly personal one and perhaps a very porous one. No easy answers and sometimes where we draw the line doesn't really make sense, even to us.

Thanks for reading! Yes, I often notice where the line is for me and how blurry it truly is. Reading Monsters was so interesting because another writer got to externalize similar topics from inside my brain.

I’ve heard good things about that book but haven’t picked it up yet myself. In recent years I’ve tried to hold more space for nuance than I did when I was younger and also have compassion for myself and not hold myself to standards that are so high they’re impossible to meet. I also ask myself questions about, like, offering monetary support to some problematic artists vs reading/listening/watching something I already own and know I like. Those feel quite different to me!

Thanks so much for the shoutout! This book was so fascinating, and Spotify Wrapped is such a straightforward reminder of these layered complexities. Our other 4 top artists were the same (!!!!!) because of course they were!

My pleasure! How am I not surprised how much overlap there is in our music tastes 😂
